Key Insights from the Singapore Retail Investor Pulse Survey
The Singapore equities market has been a hot topic of discussion, especially with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announcing a series of measures to strengthen its competitiveness.
To better understand what retail investors are looking for and how to reignite interest in Singapore stocks, Beansprout collaborated with the Securities Investors Association Singapore (SIAS) on the Singapore Retail Investor Pulse Survey.
The results are in, and they highlight key trends shaping investment decisions, as well as what can be done to enhance market vibrancy.
What Investors Are Saying
Over 1,000 investors participated in the survey, representing different age groups and investment experience levels. Here are some of the biggest takeaways:
1. Sustained interest amongst existing investors
Over 80% of investors expressed an interest in Singapore stocks.
2. Older investors have larger allocation to Singapore stocks in their portfolios
Older investors tend to allocate more to Singapore stocks due to their familiarity with local companies and the perceived stability of these investments.
3. Low Returns and Liquidity Are Key Barriers
While interest in Singapore stocks remains high, investors cited low returns, limited attractive investment options, and market liquidity as the top three concerns preventing them from increasing their exposure.
4. Returns Matter Most
When deciding where to invest, returns outweighed all other factors as the most important priority for investors. This underscores the need for better-performing investment options to sustain retail participation.
5. Investors Want Higher-Quality Investment Options
Rather than simply having more choices, investors want better stock investment options that can deliver strong and stable returns.
6. Research and Analyst Reports are Key
One of the biggest drivers of investment decisions is access to high-quality research. Many investors, especially beginners, rely on analyst reports to build confidence in their stock picks.
7. Research Needs to be More Accessible
Traditional PDF research reports by brokerages are being displaced by financial news websites and article formats, which investors find easier to consume. This points to a shift towards more user-friendly and digital-first investment insights.
