DBS wants to grow retail and wealth assets beyond S$1 trillion by 2030. We assess what this means for its earnings and our Singapore bank allocation.
Beansprout Pro in brief
- DBS aims to grow its retail and wealth assets from S$632 billion at the end of 2025 to more than S$1 trillion by 2030.
- To reach this target, DBS needs to add about S$400 billion in less than five years, roughly twice the annual pace achieved over the previous decade.
- A larger wealth business could provide DBS with more fee income and reduce its reliance on lending margins, particularly as interest rates decline.
- The announcement reinforces a broader investment theme behind my allocation to Singapore banks, as the sector benefits from Singapore’s continued growth as a regional wealth management hub.
- DBS is backing its target with additional relationship managers, new wealth centres, technology investments and partnerships, while its wealth management fees are already contributing meaningfully to earnings.
- However, the target remains ambitious. Investors will need to distinguish genuine client inflows from AUM growth driven by rising markets, while watching execution, costs and competition.
- In this update, I explain why the announcement supports, rather than changes, my Singapore bank allocation, and how I see the respective roles of DBS, OCBC and UOB within the portfolio.
