Alphabet raised 2026 capex to as much as US$205 billion, but quarterly free cash flow turned negative. Here’s what investors should watch next.
Beansprout Pro in brief
- Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between US$195 billion and US$205 billion, as demand for AI infrastructure continues to accelerate.
- Google Cloud is emerging as Alphabet’s main growth engine. Revenue increased 82% year on year, while its operating margin rose to 35.6%, showing that the business is becoming more profitable as it scales.
- Demand is also broadening beyond traditional cloud services. Alphabet has started selling Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) systems to external customers, while Google Cloud’s backlog has grown to US$514 billion.
- This suggests that the AI investment cycle is still being supported by contracted customer demand, rather than market optimism alone.
- However, Alphabet’s heavier spending is creating financial trade offs. Quarterly free cash flow turned negative for the first time in the current AI investment cycle, even though trailing 12 month cash generation remains healthy.
- Alphabet’s full stack approach, spanning custom chips, cloud infrastructure, AI models and software applications, also shows why the AI opportunity is extending beyond GPU makers alone.
- In this update, we examine what Alphabet’s results signal about the durability of the AI cycle, whether rising capex is translating into sustainable returns, and what this means for our exposure to the theme within the Opportunity model portfolio.
