TSMC raised its 2026 capex again as AI demand accelerates. We examine what its latest results mean for the broader AI investment theme.
Beansprout Pro in brief
TSMC raised its 2026 capital expenditure plan for the second time this year to between US$60 billion and US$64 billion, as demand for advanced chips continues to exceed expectations.
The company also upgraded its full year revenue outlook, while high performance computing, which includes AI accelerators and CPUs, now accounts for about two thirds of its revenue.
This suggests that the AI investment cycle is still being supported by real customer demand and capacity requirements, rather than market enthusiasm alone.
The opportunity is also broadening beyond GPUs. TSMC is seeing stronger demand across CPUs, advanced manufacturing and other parts of the semiconductor supply chain as agentic AI workloads expand.
However, higher spending does not come without risks. The ramp up of 2 nanometre technology and overseas expansion could weigh on margins and free cash flow.
In this update, we examine what TSMC’s results signal about the durability of the AI cycle, where opportunities are emerging beyond GPUs, and whether they change our exposure to the theme within the opportunity model portfolio.
